Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams

Careless People Current

Sarah Wynn-Williams

Working through this currently, but the ex-director of public policy at Meta details her experience working there. She writes in a way that makes me feel like I can really see through her eyes.

Immersive, captivating, and horrifying.

The Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins

The Jakarta Method Read

Vincent Bevins

This book made me realize that I actually like history, despite my academic experience with it. This details, with research through various primary sources, the bogglingly bloody history of the United States' involvement with foreign regimes in the 20th century.

Us by Terrence Real

Us Read

Terrence Real

Terry Real lays the framework for relational life therapy, where he details the specific skills needed to reframe "you vs me" as "us vs the issue" in relationships. Incredible insight through real-life sessions with his patients and his own life.

The Courage To Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi & Fumitake Koga

The Courage To Be Disliked Read

Ichiro Kishimi & Fumitake Koga

An intensly thought-provoking dialogue between a youth and an philosopher about framing life in a different way to find true happiness. Although the dialogue is in the context of modern life, there are still Japanese cultural biases that sneak in, which I found to be fun because I'm a third-culture kid in the US.

What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo

What My Bones Know Read

Stephanie Foo

An unapologetically raw re-telling of traumatic events in Stephanie's life that led to the development of her complex PTSD. Her insights capture heavy, powerful ideas that helped shape how I view mental health and just being human in general.

Know My Name by Chanel Miller

Know My Name Read

Chanel Miller

A memoir about sexual assault, systematic and cultural failures to support women, and the healing journey. Chanel Miller's courage and ability to write this book was incredibly moving despite all odds against her.

Activities

Tai Chi
I'm old so I needed an effective physical maintenance routine. Tai chi is fantastic.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Started in December 2024. Incredible workout while learning self-defense as a side effect.
Bouldering
Friends got me hooked sometime around 2018. Highest grade I've ever sent is a V6, though I haven't been consistent in the past few years, so that's dropped pretty significantly.
Latin Dancing
Started in late 2010. Salsa, bachata, and merengue. Would love to learn more styles.
Karaoke
This has become a regular activity in my circles, and I will sing with my people sober for hours.
Super Smash Bros
I used to compete in Super Smash Bros tournaments under the tag "Tohfoo". Highest I've ever placed was 33rd at a 512-man tournament.
Coffee
My wife does this professionally and is looking to start her own coffee cart. She's been teaching me everything I know about coffee. Turns out the rabbit hole goes beyond anything I've imagined. La Marzocco is the way.
Piano
After being classically trained, I'm trying to learn how to play piano by ear. Love playing jazz and Studio Ghibli tracks.
Languages
I grew up speaking Japanese and Mandarin and have been able to retain conversational ability in both. I'm currently taking tutoring lessons in Mandarin to go beyond "house" Chinese. Interested in picking up Filipino and Korean.
